While O2 may be known in other countries as a large mobile phone brand, it is known in the United Kingdom as one of the biggest mobile phone network services providers.  The O2 that UK residents know today is a subsidiary of the Spanish-based Telefonica S.A.  It has a long history in the telecommunications business, having been formed in 2001 after BT Wireless broke away from under the bigger British Telecom.
